While we got a brief respite from the heat here in Baltimore, it seems the thermometer is rising again. And while summer reminds us that it’s still here, you’re just hoping fall arrives soon so you’re not uncomfortable as soon as you walk out the door in the morning in your suit. But, it doesn’t have to be this way. Here are a few options when it comes to materials for warm weather suits.

Linen

Linen is lightweight as well as breathable, a great combination that will keep you a little cooler in the heat. It does not retain moisture and has a unique texture that sets it apart from other fabrics. However, linen does require careful maintenance and can wrinkle or crease easily.

Cotton

Probably the most well known warm weather fabric, cotton is light breathable, and inexpensive. Common warm weather cotton weaves include twill, poplin, seersucker, madras, and gauze. Cotton weaves have to be looses in order to let air through. A good way to put a fabric to the test is to stretch it and see if it has any give. A weave that stretches is more breathable than a weave that doesn’t.

Wool

While wool is mostly known for its use in cold weather, wool fibers actually let more air in than cotton, and certain weaves use thinner threads to offset wool’s heavier weight. It also dries faster than cotton.
