In these times, when many of us have moved our offices home due to the spread of COVID-19, there is much to consider about what to wear when you don’t leave the house for work. What should you put on for a meeting over Zoom? How casual is too casual? Do you really have to put on pants if nobody will see your bottom half?
You’ve probably noticed by now that your standard wardrobe looks different with the recent global shift to teleworking. But just because you have the option to throw all wardrobe decorum away does not mean you should. This is especially true for attending a video meeting or conference. Getting dressed and putting together a professional outfit despite working from home shows a respect for your coworkers and yourself during a difficult and unprecedented time.
So, piece together a look that is somewhere in the business casual range. You don’t have to put on a full suit, but you want something that is professional and presents well over the camera.
Here are my recommendations:
A nice pair of casual slacks. Start the bottom of your outfit with a pair of pants that are comfortable but still help you appear put-together. Think dark wash jeans or a pair of khaki chinos. Something like this will keep you comfortable, but also looking professional for a day of meetings.
A luxury t-shirt. Working from home does allow for some more casual choices. If you want to opt for a sleek button-down, please do, but you should also feel free to dress your look down. If you choose to go with a t-shirt, make it a good one. No ratty, old, stained tees; go with one made of premium fabric that is comfortable while looking sharp.
A relaxed blazer. Throwing a blazer over your t-shirt will give your look a polished edge. A blazer means you haven’t given into the temptation of a work-from-home sweatshirt uniform. There are many great options out there for more athleisure-oriented blazers, made of more comfortable and versatile fabrics while still completing your look with a smart top layer.
A pair of slippers fit for a king. Maybe yours is a no-shoes household, or maybe you just want a more soothing footwear option since you aren’t heading into the office. Like I said, some wardrobe adjustments are allowed in a work-from-home moment. So, splurge on those comfortable slippers you have been ogling and finish off your virtual meeting look with a cloud to envelope your feet. While navigating a global pandemic, we all deserve a little comfort.
With these pieces, you are sure to impress while sitting comfortably at home.
My one last tip for your virtual meeting attire? Never go pantless. You may think that no one will ever see your bottom half on camera, but accidents can always happen. Maybe you leave your power cord in the other room or your notes get knocked under your desk. The last thing you want is for your boss to catch sight of your undies.
I hope these tips make your virtual work experience a little bit easier. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.
