The oversized suit can be a great tool and is a fashionable trend, but there are some factors you should keep in mind before giving it a try.
2020 has been a year of highs and lows, weird happenings and unexpected trends. The mask has become a necessary fashion accessory. Sweatpants are a top style as working from home has become the norm for many. But one new men’s fashion trend caught my eye recently: the oversized suit.
This trend was spotted on the runways forecasting fashion trends for this season, and it has been seen in celebrity style. The oversized suit is exactly as it sounds: a much looser-fitting suit that often verges on a baggy look. Jude Law sported an example for all to see.
I am the number one fan of correct fit, but I also don’t turn a blind eye to new trends, as they often change the style landscape and can help us spice up our look. So when it came to the trending status of the oversized suit, I took everything into consideration: Does it bring a next-level fashion status? Does it work in certain cases and not in others? Will this oversized look make the world a better place for all eyes involved?
After considering all these factors, I’ve come to the conclusion that the oversized suit can be a great tool and trend for the fashion-forward guy. However, the style peasants among us should stick with a tailored look, which will never go out of style and, with the right fit, will always look good.
There are many ways to do an oversized suit wrong and ruin your look. If you want to take a risk in the name of fashion, please do, but if you are looking to stay under the radar while sporting a guaranteed good look, stick to a tailored fit.
If you feel you have the style chutzpah to give this look a go, there are a few things you should remember:
Don’t wear it too tight
This may seem a pretty obvious tip for a style that is built upon oversized clothing. However, many men have taken looser clothing as a cue to wear items that aren’t really their size. Just because something is oversized doesn’t mean you can throw away all fitting requirements. Make sure your waist is big enough on your slacks, and be sure that the chest and back of your jacket fit you.
Don’t make it too oversized
The trend calls for looser tailoring, but you don’t have to look like you’re wearing a trash bag. Make sure to study style icons who have donned the look and take notes on how to wear a loose suit that still flatters. You don’t want to completely obliterate your body shape. Remember that if your belt is the only thing holding up your pants, they are too loose.
Nervous? Start with one oversized piece
Maybe you want to try this trend but you’re feeling a bit anxious. Overcome that by starting with one oversized piece in your look. Instead of donning a full suit, go for a simple wide-leg trouser or an oversized jacket paired with a tailored pant. Stick to what’s mostly familiar in your wardrobe and change it up with just one piece. That way you won’t get overwhelmed by having to figure out a completely new look.
Don’t worry: A slim, tailored suit is still cool
I can hear all you worrywarts right now. You’re anxious because you feel like you are just figuring out your style, and now it’s all changing. Fear not — your classic tailored suit is definitely still stylish. As I said, this look will never go out of style as it withstands the trends that come and go.
