Different Ways to Tie a Tie

When choosing a suit to wear in the morning, choosing the correct tie can make or break the suit. A lot of thought goes into a well-chosen tie, but how often do you consider the way you tie your tie? Using different knots can add a subtle but classy dynamic to your suit. Variety is the spice of life, so don’t use the same knot every day. Here are a few knots for you to try. Anyone with an eye for clothing will certainly take notice.

Four in Hand Knot

The classic knot that your dad taught you how to tie the first time you ever wore a tie. This knot works well with ties that are wide and made of thick fabric, and can be paired with the tried and true partner of a standard button down dress shirt. The knot itself is narrow and slightly asymmetrical.

Pratt/Shelby Knot

This is a wide knot which will complement any dress shirt and is best suited for ties made from light to medium fabrics.

Windsor Knot

A Windsor Knot is a thick, wide, triangular knot that works well with spread collar shirts. It is wider than both the Four in Hand and Pratt/Shelby knot’s.

Half Windsor Knot

Wider than every knot listed but the Windsor, a Half Windsor knot suits wide ties made from light to medium fabric. This knot is so named because it is only brought up and around the loop on one side rather than both when tying the tie.
